How This Female Boss Knocked Out One of Her Business Goals

Updated: Aug 28, 2019

We all tend to set goals for our businesses and life. Imagine knocking out one of your goals in the first half of the year.

Let’s talk about major accomplishments - Coriss Watson, a wedding/lifestyle photographer out of Mississippi, and owner of Coriss Watson Photography, LLC set her mind on a goal and executed it within the second quarter of this season. Let’s hear how she did it.

I sat down with Coriss at one of her favorite locations, Cups Coffee, on a warm, southern spring day. It was just after the evening rush hour as the day passed us by with the sky painting a beautiful sunset of pink and orange rays.

Coriss rushes in and greets me with the biggest smile displaying beautiful white teeth, and dimples on each of her cheeks. She is super cheerful and excited because of her recent accomplishment.

Let‘s jump right into it:

Krispin (Kris): Okay! So share the big news...what has you so excited, and is a major accomplishment for your business?!

Coriss (Co): Being featured as a published photographer.

Krispin (Kris): Amazing! Which publication featured you?

Coriss (Co): Black Bride

Kris: How did you feel when you found out Black Bride wanted to publish you?

Co: I was very excited that my work was going to be seen by many people on a national level.

Kris: Congratulations! What is one thing you attribute to assisting you with meeting your goal?

Co: Really just hard work you know and working with amazing clients. Learning more about my craft also helped.

Kris: How did you learn more about your craft?

Co: A lot was trial and error and following people on social media whose work I admire. I was trying not to make the same mistake. If I made the same mistake, I would research and learn how to become a better photographer.

Kris: Do you think social media contributed to your business being where it is now?

Co: I feel like my style of photography helped to contribute to my business being where it is now. Even though social media plays a big part, I feel like my style and the way I treat my clients also contributes greatly to where my business is today. Social media helps to spread good work

Kris: So it all kind of plays a role?

Co: Yes!

Kris: Give us some background about Captured by Coriss...like when you got started, what motivated you to start a photography business, and also what keeps you motivated to becoming a self-driven entrepreneur?

Co: Well, I got started six years ago, in 2013, and I pretty much always liked photography. So if it worked out, fine, and if it didn't work out, fine. You know.... I wasn't going to lose any sleep over it, but luckily it did. What started as a hobby has turned into a second full-time job. Knowing that this is something that I love to do and is something fun...it keeps me motivated.

Kris: If you, where you are now, met yourself six years ago when you were first thinking about starting a photography business, what advice would you give yourself?

Co: Invest in mentoring. Investing in your business early on helps you not to make as many mistakes along the way. It will speed up your career as to where you want to go.

Kris: How far do you plan to go with photography? Do you ever see yourself stopping?

Co: I'm going to continue to go until I can't go anymore. I know there is going to be a point in my career where I won't be able to do photography, but hopefully during that time I will be able to explore other avenues that are affiliated with photography such as mentoring upcoming photographers.

Coriss has recently started booking brides for 2020 and she couldn’t be more excited. You can check out her work and connect with her on capturedbycoriss.com or visit her on Instagram @capturedbycoriss.
